VISIT YEVPATORIYA, THE ONE OF
Today Yevpatoriya, Crimea, has become a favorite
Black Sea resort for millions of tourists. Why does this
town seem so attractive for the travelers? First of all,
because of its perfect climate, soft sandy beaches, warm sea
and at the same time - very affordable prices (compared to
Yalta and Sevastopol).
But in addition to all this, Yevpatoriya, Crimea is a
gorgeous ancient town with the history spanning more than 25
centuries (In 2003 Yevpatoriya marked its 2500-th birthday).
The history of the town began with a small settlement of
ancient Greeks called Kerkinitida. From the VI century B.C.
to the end of the IV century B.C. Greek "polis" of
Kerkinitida existed as an independent state and conducted
trade in fishery products, wine-making and agriculture with
many cities of the Northern Black Sea area as well as with
its metropolian power - Hellas.

Archaeological excavations also show that since ancient
times till the Middle Ages a seaport existed on the
territory of Yevpatoriya, Crimea. In 1223 with the invasion
of nomadic Tartar-Mongols to Crimea a new period in the
history of the ancient settlement on the Black Sea started.
It got the name of Gezlev, which translated from Turkish
meant "hundred eyes," perhaps because the town began to
serve as something like an observation point for the Turkish
Sultan. Favorable geographical location of Gezlev - between
the port which could take a thousand of ships and
grain-producing fields - contributed to its rapid
transformation into a rich and flourishing trade centre.

Beside a brisk trade involving a wide variety of goods,
there was a slave market existed in Gezlev, right near the
pier. Hundreds of captured Slavic men, women and children
were sold overseas almost every day. However from time to
Zaporozhian Cossacks on their light "seagull" boats raided
the port and liberated the slaves. In XVI century Cossacks'
raids became more and more successful.

Russians reinterpreted in their own way and the city became
known as Kozlov ("Goat-town"). During the few
Russian-Turkish wars of the XVIII century Kozlov was
conquered twice by Russian troops. On the 8-th of April,
1783 Crimea formally entered to the Russian Empire and a

Russian queen Catherine II decided to give
the town a new name after the king of Bosporus kingdom Mithridates VI Eupator who helped the
ancient Kerkinitida in repelling the attacks of nomadic
tribes. Eupator means "born noble", hence Yevpatoriya has
similar meaning, something like "the town born by the noble
father." After Crimea became a part of Russia, rapid
development of the region started, and Yevpatoriya acquired
as a sea port and resort.
